Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People

tcr! · Oct 6, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Robert’s got a quick hand
He’ll look around the room
He won’t tell you his plan
He’s got a rolled cigarette hanging out his mouth
He’s a cowboy kid
Yeah, he found a six-shooter gun
In his dad’s closet hidden in a box of fun things
And I don’t even know what
But he’s coming for you, yeah, he’s coming for you

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Daddy works a long day
He be coming home late, yeah, he’s coming home late
And he’s bringing me a surprise
Because dinner’s in the kitchen and it’s packed in ice
I’ve waited for a long time
Yeah, the slight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
And say your hair’s on fire
You must have lost your wits, yeah

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

I love the simple drum kit.

Peace Out Steve

These guys say it better than I can.

Universe Dented, Grass Underfoot via daringfireball.net

But the thing that struck me were his shoes, those famous gray New Balance 993s. They too were well-worn. But also this: fresh bright green grass stains all over the heels.

Steve Jobs as Frank Lloyd Wright via scripting.com

I wish Jobs had been a blogger, had written about his design process, so I could quote something. But he was the opposite of a blogger. Jobs was a mass communicator. No one in my generation has mastered the art as Jobs did. Today, with the outpouring of feeling on the net, are people mourning the man, or the phenomena he could unleash, just by saying “One more thing.”

Without Jobs, Pixar might never have broke free from Lucasfilm: advancing computer animation beyond universities and experimental film.

It’s impossible to imagine the web as it is today without Steve Jobs in the story. Even something as seemingly simple as proportional width fonts might not exist were it not for Jobs and Apple, to say nothing of the WebKit project and dozens of other contributions.

Jobs authorized biography so his kids can know him via reuters.com

Steve Jobs, in pain and too weak to climb stairs a few weeks before his death, wanted his children to understand why he wasn’t always there for them, according to the author of his highly anticipated biography.

Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.

Steve Jobs via cringely.com

I first met Steve Jobs in the spring of 1977 when I helped the two Steves take a prototype computer out of Woz’s Fiat at a Homebrew Computer Club meeting. In the 34 years that followed I was hired and fired by Steve more than once, our relationship conducted in large part through screaming. “Sometimes I can be an asshole,” he said to me many times, and it was true, but I miss him already.

Firefox 10 Going for Stealth Updates

tcr! · Oct 4, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Mozilla aims to add silent updating to Firefox 10

A year after it pulled the plug on silent updates in Firefox 4, Mozilla said it will debut most of the behind-the-scenes feature by early next year.

Assuming Mozilla pulls off silent upgrading this time around, it would make Firefox only the second browser to take that route. Google’s Chrome has been the poster boy for automatic updates that remove the user from the equation and can’t be switched off.

This the main beef I have with many of Google’s products - update processes running in the background and auto-updating whenever they see fit. I have no say with Google Chrome, it updates whenever there’s a new release. I don’t get a choice, I don’t notified, I don’t get anything - it just happens. Some people may like this but it borders on malware in some countries. Back before they shutdown Google Desktop, their help site said to shut off the auto-update, just uninstall it - the whole app.

Anyways the good news is Mozilla will let me shut this off. It is my computer after all.

PS: I’ve been using Chromium without auto-updates and I’m happy with it for the most part. You really have to dig for a Mac DMG though.

carved from the earth
with the power to breathe life with a smile,
his polished ivory skin
and chameleon-like eyes
never miss what they’re looking for

salmon pink and perfect to the touch,
his mouth can stop me from falling
and his fingers push limits all over my body

twilight in the forest
smoke trails leaving my lips to his,
we breathe in deep the silver light.
our fortunes materializing in fading atmospheres,
the waiting hurts

spread out like death
upon barren rocks i wait
and the tides tease my hands
and the waves crash against my face;
i can taste you in the salty foam
i can feel you in its jet stream warmth

and it washes over me

Hotmail will now auto-magically delete email for you

tcr! · Oct 3, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Microsoft aiming to clean up Hotmail user’s inboxes

The idea here is to allow users to feel confident that they don’t have to constantly be flooded with new messages from frequent message senders. This feature allows users to automatically keep only the latest message from a specific sender. They can choose to have additional messages moved to a folder or to delete older messages after three, 10, 30, or 60 days.

Pesonally, I think people just need to take control of their Inbox, similar to taking control of a pile of papers on your desk. My Inbox always stays tidy; more on that in a future post.

$10 says more than one user will have something important nuked.

Machine learning always fails.

That might be a little bit of "sensationalism" in the headline. I doubt if they'll just auto-magically turn it on and set the dial to delete after 3 days.

Just a Reminder - World Ends October 21

tcr! · Oct 3, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Harold Camping reaffirms October date for the end of the world, says May 21 date was ‘invisible judgment day’

Harold / Homer - the end is near

“It wont be spiritual on October 21st,” Camping said, adding, “the world is going to be destroyed all together, but it will be very quick.”

[…]

“We had all of our dates correct,” Camping insisted, clarifying that he now understands that Christ’s May 21 arrival was “a spiritual coming” ushering in the last five months before the final judgment and destruction.

Anybody got plans for October 22?

SS Badger dumping TONS of coal ash - “Harmless as Sand”

tcr! · Oct 3, 2011 at 7:37 am

On Lake Michigan, a coal-burning steamship gets a pass

Chicago Tribune front page - On Lake Michigan, a coal-burning steamship gets a pass

But every day it sails between this old shipbuilding port and Ludington, Mich., the Badger dumps nearly 4 tons of coal ash into Lake Michigan — waste concentrated with arsenic, lead, mercury and other toxic metals. During its spring-to-fall season, federal records show, the amount far exceeds the coal, iron and limestone waste jettisoned by all 125 other big ships on the Great Lakes combined.

[…]

As the last season before the EPA’s deadline comes to an end, the owners instead are seeking an exemption from the federal Clean Water Act that would delay a fix until at least 2017.

Not sure why this boat is still allowed on the water. It should’ve been docked years ago. Worse still is that people rally behind the SS Badger.

Brooklyn Bridge Protest - Similar to Egypt?

tcr! · Oct 2, 2011 at 6:29 am

More than 700 arrested in Wall Street protest

The arrests took place when a large group of marchers, participating in a second week of protests by the Occupy Wall Street movement, broke off from others on the bridge’s pedestrian walkway and headed across the Brooklyn-bound lanes.

Occupy Wall Street has a live stream of goodness.
