The summer of 2019

tcr! · Sep 27, 2019 at 10:00 am

Audio (MP3): 20190927 - The summer of 2019

Morning green lights

Peeps, it was a busy summer.

Most of it was spent cleaning and packing up my house. That was a lot. I lived there for 11 years, the longest place I’d ever lived in my life. I threw away countless bags of trash, of life debris and clutter. β›Έ

In June Sara and I went to see Ludovico at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago. Maggie and I went to Gay Pride in Aurora. Sara took all of us to Cantigny Park for my 47th birthday. We played mini golf in the dark during Swedish Days.

A kid without a bike

tcr! · Jul 11, 2019 at 11:07 am

In my neighborhood we have an alley that runs behind all of our houses. It’s where our garages are and where we set out our trash cans. Maggie learned to ride her bike there and all that. It’s where the real stories are.

Having the alley is nice because we can put things out there that are still good and somebody will come along and pick them up.

So a couple of weeks ago I was cleaning out my garage and wheeled Maggie’s kid bike out by the alley. She’s too big to ride it anymore and I knew somebody would snag it before long. Maybe pop a couple wheelies and jump some sweet jumps on their sidewalk.

But you wanna know who took it?

My good Christian neighbor. A few nights later when Maggie and I were coming home down the alley she said, “Hey! That’s my bike!”

Yep, it’d moved a mere 30-ish feet over into the neighbor’s yard.

Bike sitting there with the weeds

Granted my neighbor had every right to it since I put it up for grabs but it’s kind of disheartening to see Maggie’s first ride just leaning up against the neighbor’s garage the last couple weeks.

Instead of some other kid without a bike being able to ride it this summer it’s sitting there with the weeds.

PS- this is the same neighbor that choked the goose and dumped yard debris by the retention pond.

That is sad about the bike. However, I know she is probably looking for a kid to give it to. She does that. Maybe she thought she was saving it from scrappers. Also, she’s not a Christian. I’ve talked to her many times. She may identify herself that way, but she does not accept Christ as her savior. In fact, she very rarely even goes to church. Trust me… I’ve tried to share and talk the gospel with her many times to no avail. She’s not even sure what she believes, but it’s not that needs Christ as her savior.

Mirah the cat in blue

I struggle in life more than I’d like to admit. I get frustrated when I need to tie my shoes. I’m restless just living.

I do better when I’m around people but am prone to isolate. I never think about drinking anymore but will make myself sick on licorice.

If I don’t have a big art project in the works I don’t feel complete. I’ll often burn through months building and then burn myself out with the pens and the paints. Then I’ll only want to play video games for weeks on end.

I brush my teeth two to three times a day and then rinse with peroxide. And then use my water pick with three fingers of alcoholic mouthwash in the reservoir. I’m interested in thoroughness.

I don’t like that I can never get the fan oscillation just right and will often wonder what I’m supposed to be doing in life. Because so far I feel like I get really close but the finish line is for those other guys.

It’s like practicing for a play, memorizing all the lines, rehearsing every morning, afternoon, and night. And then when the curtains open only a few people have shown up.

I put on Ludovico or Baroque so I can listen while falling asleep. Then I won’t think and will drift off to soothing piano keys and calming violins.

But I think anyway. I write notes like these in my phone. Sometimes they’re spiritual and fruity. Other times they’re not. The fan blows so loud I can’t hear the music.

And then the cat jumps on me and I get up and brush my teeth again.

I’m not even kidding.

Keep living, peeps

tcr! · Jun 21, 2019 at 9:34 am

Day before yesterday I posted

It seems as if there are almost too many things that we’ll never get over.

We just learn to live with them.

…and I’ve been thinking lots about that whole topic ever since.

Some of you may know this story and some may not.

I was married for a brief era in the mid 90s. My wife at the time was pregnant and she carried our baby the full nine months. When she was due we rushed to the hospital and then something went horribly wrong.

They took Kathy to another room and had me and her family over in some waiting area. I could hear the baby crying and crying. Medical staff was running back-and-forth. A lot of commotion for sure. And then it was over. The baby died 15 minutes or so after she was born.

The loss of a child, the unexpected death of a loved one, traumatic physical injury, those types of pains are things we never get over. They just become part of who we are. Our life stories shape us, define us. We are who we are because of what’s happened while we’ve been alive.

Every time I hear a story about a child dying it almost always makes me sad. It pulls at my heart strings because I can relate. I think about being in that hospital with Kathy in the middle of nowhere Iowa and the emotional earthquake that changed everything. And the aftershocks are still with me not because I haven’t prayed for acceptance or processed my grief. It’s because it’s part of my story now. There’s no getting over it. There was no quick solution for dealing with the flood of feelings that came afterward.

In related news I read once that our parents’ memories can be passed to us genetically. Not like vivid, detailed recollections but more subliminal feelings, maybe subtle intuitions. When I read the article I thought, “fuck… our experiences are literally fused into our DNA.”

My feelings of loss can even resurface unexpectedly when I’m having a great moment with Maggie. I always wanted to be a dad and my first chance was taken away from me. Abruptly. Am I going to get over that? No. Don’t ever ask someone to. Pain of that magnitude will stop when it’s done working you over. My part is just to process and carry on.

Sometimes life works out how we want and sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s never about the outcome. It’s about the experience. It’s the shifts in our soul that offer to make us bigger people. We learn how to love and support each other.

When we look back over our lifetimes they’ll be overflowing with memories. Some good, some great and some bad, and others horrible. That sudden death helped make me be the best dad that I can be for Maggie. I know that it has.

Maggie's Father's Day inscription

Don’t be quick to discard life defining moments. We need those experiences to build better lives in the here and now.

Keep living, peeps. Keep loving. No matter what. ❀️

The other night Sara and I were watching The Leftovers, season 3 episode 4. Kevin says to Nora something along the lines of getting over her lost kids. And then last night we watched episode 6 and Kevin and his ex-wife Laurie were sharing memories of when they were married.

If you haven’t watched The Leftovers, you’re missing out.

Desperately seeking lost license plate for 20th century truck

tcr! · May 18, 2019 at 2:24 pm

It jumped off on a whim somewhere in the Fox Valley. Maybe in the Blue Goose parking lot. Maybe at the Geneva Public Library. Maybe on the corner by Water Street Studios. Who knows.

The last four confirmed digits are 1317 — see partial photo of rear plate below.

1317 license plate

The missing front plate is metal (not magnetic) with a white background, red lettering, and blue embossed numbers. Sadly, it does not respond to voice commands no matter how firm or how gentle your tone.

The STC police issued me one verbal warning last night and the officer confirmed a ticketed warning could be next. I’ve alerted Jessie White to no avail. After repeated attempts to contact him earlier this morning, all my calls are now being immediately directed to voicemail.

The reward for safe and prompt return of this license plate is one signed copy of my latest book — see attached photo of myself and said book below.

tcr! and the diaries for 2018 book

The diaries for 2018 book will be handsomely delivered to your personal front door, or your preferred rendezvous location.

I know I could simply get replacement plates but first I need an emissions check and then I need to go to the DMV. And my poor truck needs an oil change. And then to make matters completely worse, it’s raining and thundering right now. Or it was at least when I started writing this.

Until this matter is resolved, my truck and I will continue to live on the edge of the legal system. Per usual. I should probably print up flyers and hang them at Blue Goose, the Fox Valley libraries, and Water Street Studios.

Please help.

And yes, the book / plate swap is a real thing.

tcr! tcr! · May 18, 2019 at 3:14 pm

I don’t really like going the DMV website. It’s callled cyberdrive.com and it makes me feel kinda weird inside and not in a good way. I’m not exactly sure why the police pulled me over last night. He said my pink taillights were kinda dim and then all I could think was “How would you know unless you’ve been checking out my backside when I wasn’t looking?!??!!”
