A chipmunk just cost me $258 for a chewed-threw wire replacement. At first I thought it was something I’d messed up when installing the ecobee thermostat but no, it was a dumb rodent.
Repair guy said they detect the heat in the wire and think it’s a food source of some kind. I guess with brains smaller than a walnut, they have to be pretty stupid.

This is why I hate linking to 3rd party libraries. A website that’s been happily chugging along for years now has a broken contact form. Nobody has been able to submit contact requests for who knows how long because the captcha check fails.

I’m glad they’re redoing this building on the corner of Prairie St. and Second in St. Charles. The stucco look never appealed to me.
Plus, I was always worried that I’d be merrily walking one day, trip over some unseen obstacle, and wildly tumble into the building. Then I’d come away with a nasty abrasion on my right shoulder.

An open letter to C. Elton, Civil Engineer I:
It was with great anticipation and suspense that I read your letter (Exhibit A) regarding the saw cutting about to commence in my neighborhood, dated June 25, 2018.
As you can see I’ve made little haste in responding via email. Even though you offered your local phone number I prefer not to talk on the phone as there were one too many times when I was younger that my mom handed me the phone while she was talking with some dear, distant relative. I had little interest in talking to the person on the other end but still my mother insisted I take the handset and carry on a conversation like I knew who Uncle Leroy and Aunt Loretta were.
However, when I write these words, they flow like a magical river thesaurus dinosaur as I press the delicate yet responsive keys on my iPad Pro’s external and official keyboard.

“So are you here to hear the truth?” asks Depp as Russell brings him a glass of vintage red wine. “It’s full of betrayal.”
We move to the dining room for a three-course meal of pad thai, duck and gingerbread with berries. Depp sits at the head of the table and motions toward some rolling papers and two equal piles of tobacco and hash, and asks if I mind. I don’t. He pauses for a second. “Well, let’s drink some wine first.”
This goes on for 72 hours.
72 hours sounds like a Hunter S. Thompson escapade for sure.

We all have things to answer for. Things that shouldn’t be forgiven but are.

In other TV news, one of the reasons I like Sci-Fi shows is that the good ones also have their characters searching for and finding spiritual truths. Along with shooting their laser guns.
PS- I got a set of Expo markers and then Maggie and I wrote formulas on the family room windows. Because that’s what you do when you’re us.
You: What do the formulas mean?
Me: No questions.

Audio (MP3): 20180625 - Post mortem, Bourdain
The thing that I had a hard time wrapping my mind around with Anthony Bourdain’s suicide is that I kept thinking he was supposed to be above all of that. I wanted not to be surprised but I really was. I felt let down at first regardless of what I said.
I don’t have the kind of heroes or as many of them as I did when I was a teenager but Bourdain may have been the closest thing I had to a celebrity hero as a grown-up.
From the time he was a teenager, through his 20s and 30s, on into his 40s and 50s, and then even in his 60s I admired and respected his different phases and who he ended up as a human being.
With his death I kept thinking annoyed, “you don’t give up.”
When people lose their hope it can sometimes rub off on us. There’s nothing good enough out there to look forward to kinda thing. When the future’s not bright and the struggles of everyday are too much then what’s the point?
I never saw Bourdain as wondering what the point was though. Or running out of hope. But then again I only saw what made it into his TV shows.
Kinda sucks that real-life heroes are only humans, too.

I loved Bourdain, too, watched him throughout the years, and always thought he had such sad eyes, like he was carrying the weight of the world. After periodically reading he suffered from depression, alcoholism and heroin addiction, this sadness made sense to me. I also read he had relapsed with the heroin and that broke my heart, but I understand when the last vestiges of hope are gone and the pain is so overwhelming, death seems to be the only option for relief. I am so sad he is gone, but will never…as some will say…will never call him a coward or selfish. Imagine the pain he must have suffered to resort to suicide, and feel only loss and sympathy.

Maybe what we learn is that when we ask someone how they are they they say, “Having a bad day,” or even “so-so,” we need to ask, “What’s going on with you?” or “How can I help?”
