Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy by Devo

tcr! · Sep 15, 2017 at 10:18 am

Peeps, here’s your stripped-away-my-garment Friday jam.

This is definitely my favorite Devo song. It’s a nice slow build with all that emotional angst toward another that I’m so fond of. Decent audio quality for a live video, too, even if Mark Mothersbaugh’s keyboards are a little high in the mix.

And bonus points for Mothersbaugh, doing the Rugrats sound track and all.

Bogus hits from a sponsored Facebook post

tcr! · Sep 14, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Facebook hits for sponsored podcast post

Earlier today I did a Facebook sponsored post for my diaries podcast. Now my site is being hammered with bogus hits.

Why do I think they’re bogus? Because between 12:07 pm and 12:51 pm I had 130+ hits from Facebook, all with nearly identical Facebook app versions (140.0.0.63.89) and iOS versions (10.3.3).

Not a single Android hit. Not a single browser hit with Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer.

And NONE of them had JavaScript or cookies enabled. That NEVER happens.

Download the spreadsheet if ya wanna see some suspicious activity.

Facebook is regularly caught inflating metrics so this doesn’t surprise me but it does piss me off.

And the hits are still pouring in. 😂 🙄

The mailman drops the mail off in the little reception area here at work.

Fearless Leader just yelled “HI” to him from his office. 🤔

Was it the sort of “hi” that means he’s trying to humanize himself by connecting with those he considers beneath him, but ends up sounding like it’s his first day out of alien spy school and he’s also kind of a jerk? That kind of “hi”?

Haha! That was pretty much it.

The mailman didn’t verbally respond. I wish I could’ve seen the expression on his face. I bet he had a visual response.

I picture bosses as overgrown children with ADHD and a mean streak. The “hi” was the same you’d hear from a kindergartner who was only trying to lure into his web of loneliness and torment. He’d appear nice for awhile but sooner or later he’d steal your damn pants and tell Eileen Martin you weren’t wearing any when you got there.

Exactly this.

Are any of these Eileen Martin?

T, one of your comment notifications went to my spam folder in Gmail… But only one. Maybe because there were a lot in a short time, I’m not sure.

I’d also like to see the mailman’s expression! Your boss’s hi reminds me of a guy in the office here - he’s the kind of person who asks “how’s it going” but completely doesn’t even hear you respond. I mean, I’m sure I could literally reply with “yellow dinosaur ping-pong” and he would never notice.

Jimi - never take your pants off for a kindergartner. It’s definitely frowned upon.

Yep, frequency is a big part of the Gmail spam filters.

Someday I’m gonna build a notification system like FB’s into the site. Email is so 1990s.

Gmail also marks anything in a foreign language as spam, and you can’t turn that off. Which is annoying if you have friends in non-english-speaking countries.

I like the notification idea.

T: None are Eileen.

Keamoose: I know that NOW. But he had a certain kinda reasonableness about him and a je ne sais quoi that couldn’t be turned off. :)

I saw that Home Depot has skeletal horses and T. rexes and I now wish we had a Home Depot nearby.

Stella, our black roommate (cat) is getting old. We’ve had to keep her indoors for at least 13 Halloween’s, because of evil mofo’s. She’s only killed one small animal this year, but it was unrecognizable. She flayed that smaller critter! For years we would find evidence of her handiwork in the bushes etc. These skeliti reminded me of her younger mass murdering machine days.

keamoose: maybe they’ll ship their horse skeleton to Canada.

jimi: yep, after some crippled Fat Cat with a BB gun the sister cats never go outside unless they’re on a leash.

No such luck, they’re asking for a zip code to even tell me about shipping. The Canadian site has a smaller pony version and a triceratops, but it looks like in-store pickup is the only option. Too bad; I’d have left that T. rex up year-round, although I might have had to modify it to reflect current science on T. rex posture. :P

Gas cap flopping around

tcr! · Sep 13, 2017 at 10:27 am

Audio (MP3): 20170913 - Gas cap flopping around

Peeps, I was driving somewhere a few days back and was in a hurry. Of course. I’d stopped at the gas station a few minutes before and that had thrown me even more behind schedule. Of course.

So I was sitting at this stoplight impatiently, rolling my eyes at the car line up before me. And then somebody knocks on my driver’s side window. For a half second I thought it was the police since my license plates are expired and all.

But it was just a regular guy that wanted to let me that my gas door was open.

Way cool that it wasn’t the police but even more way cool that a complete stranger had gotten out of his car at a stoplight to let me know that my gas cap was dangling and the door was open.

There I’d been racing through town with my gas cap flopping around. Like an asshole. I had thought I’d heard something bumping but that’s normal if you drive a used car. Plus, I was in a hurry. Of course.

Again, pretty cool that the dude hopped out of his car at a stoplight just to be a better person.

So then the light turned green and he started to hustle back to his car. But then he stopped, did a 180 and said, “let me just get that for you.” And then he put my gas cap back on and shut the door.

Peeps, that is nothing short of America.[1]

It may feel like our world is going to shit but we as individuals are what make the difference. In less than ten seconds that guy made the world just that much better.

So why do I put this out there for the universe to see? A moment akin to me walking around with my fly open? Because it keeps me humble, it keeps me grounded. Keeps me from thinking I’m all that and a bag of chips.

But more importantly it’s a good reminder that there are way cool, selfless people out there. People doing their part to make the world a better place. People that we don’t even know.

  1. I dictate many things to Notes.app and for this particular post it heard “America” instead of “miracle.” I couldn’t change it since I’m me.
