Following a meteoric rise to just shy of $20,000 per coin less than two months ago, Bitcoin, the oldest and most valuable cryptocurrency, fell below $10,000 on both the Coinbase and Bittrex exchanges for the first time since early December. It’s far from the only digital token plummeting.
Nearly every cryptocurrency is down, most by double digit percents, according to Coin Market Cap. The crash seems driven by fear of looming regulations from Germany, stricter laws in South Korea, and an increasing involvement by the SEC. Reddit community r/CryptoCurrency is directing US-based community members to the Suicide Hotline while panic ensues.
Every now and then someone will ask me about Bitcoin. I don’t know how it works under the hood but I get the gist of it.
What I also get is the reoccurring feeling that I like stable and mature technologies. Crytpocurrency is volatile and the people involved are lunatics.
99% of the ‘hodlers’ have no idea what they’re talking about, the other 1% is hoping to scam the 99%
Have fun with all that.
Bitcoin and its kin are here to stay for sure but until you can buy stuff on Amazon with them, meh.

Audio (MP3): 20180116 - I've always been at war with machine X
I can only feel hurt and blame someone else for so long.
And after that time is over I have to either say something or let it go. I don’t have the right to hold onto my hurt for years if I’m not gonna do anything about it. Not doing anything other than hurting, well, it’s not fair to the other person and it’s definitely not fair to me.
Living with that hurt keeps me from being the best me that I can be. That hurt stands in the way of all of my relationships.
There’s a lot to be said for saying something out loud. When things are up in my head I can’t make sense of them. My thoughts are like a whirlpool or tornado. Or both. They’re just going around and around and they don’t make any sense. My emotions are all muddy and I can’t get the clarity to know up from down.
I don’t sit with things very long in the here-and-now because I’ve learned that life lesson. That I’m only going to be hurting myself and most likely innocent bystanders by not speaking up.
Also, I never write something in hopes that someone else will read it. That misses the point of everything I just wrote.

“A lot of today’s Hollywood films don’t have a lot of patience,” he says. “They sort of expect the audience to get bored really quickly, so they’re like, ‘We’ve got to have an explosion every 10 minutes.’”
But the slow pace of Blade Runner 2049 is proving a challenge for many viewers, and so far the movie hasn’t attracted an audience that extends much beyond fans of the original. Michener thinks it’s appropriate that the film, like its predecessor, is a box office disappointment. “They made a sequel to a cult classic,” she says. “It was not designed to work with the Fast & Furious crowd.”
Now that you’ve had time to see it here’s a little commentary.
Establishing Ryan Gosling’s character as a replicant straight away was nice. Take that whole debate off the table and focus on the new story. Then again, I cared about Ford as Rick Deckard and I struggled with caring about K. He’s a skinned robot, maybe a few levels up from Alexa. And he’s gotten along just fine without a soul. I did enjoy his “I have to be quiet and do my job like a good toy soldier” persona. Even if he knew something bigger was going on, something bigger was out there.
And then Jared Leto in the movie. I hated him — but the more I’ve thought about it, I really just hated the snobby kimono-wearing weirdo that he was. “Shhh…” he says to the replicant who just dropped outta a body bag, one who’s cold and covered in goop. I’m not of them richly self-consumed types and I suppose Wallace was intended to revolt us common peasants.
I’m happy that they didn’t pretty Robin Wright up. She’s beautiful here in the real world but her character’s appearance reflected the trashed future they all lived in. That’s minor but it’s all too easy to make stars shine more than they should.
I seriously hope nobody expected it to be a blockbuster. It’s slow and brooding, just like the bubbling pot in the beginning. The heavy black cast iron boiling garlic on the stove. Humid and pungent when you lift the lid. Quietly clanging, simmering in its heaviness.
That early scene and visual kinda set the pace, the tone for me.
The soundtrack also closely mirrors the movie’s overall feel. I’ve listened to it more than anything else while doing my 9-5’s.
It lingered there to touch your hair.
Mixing Sinatra and Elvis with Zimmer and Wallfisch is pure brilliance. Ebb and flow of loss-full melancholy.
Audio bonus points: the latter also did the soundtrack for Hidden Figures. You should really see that, too, if you haven’t already. Here’s Katherine to get you started.

Peeps, here’s your so-you-can-wipe-off-that-grin Monday afternoon jam to continue with the relationships are hard theme.
Musically, the drums are center stage and who can resist their 3:15 mark? You know you love it.
The interesting thing for me about this song is that when I was a kid going to the school skating parties, the boys and girls would always skate together like this was a couples song.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life” — something magical was about to happen for them guys and girls skating and holding hands out there in the dark.
But then I was always confused about Collins letting someone drown. It wasn’t until years later that I learned it’s definitely not a love song. It’s another of my favorites for sure but it’s the definition of marriage macabre.

Peeps, here’s your because-i-love-you-too-much Monday jam.
I feel like I’m too cool to listen to Elvis but this song’s still one of my top 20 faves. He totally owns this song, too.
I’d forgotten about it for years until it showed up on the Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack.
