Robert Rickhoff’s Out of Place Series

Juxtapoz Magazine - Out Of Place: Works by Robert Rickhoff

Juxtapoz Magazine - Out Of Place: Works by Robert Rickhoff

This is how we like to kick off the year, with a series of Out of Place objects constructed by a very clever Robert Rickhoff. Playground slides that lead you to oncoming traffic, volleyball courts on the autobahn, skate ramp crosswalks, all situations that are going to lead you to some sort of disaster. Rickhoff is based in Germany, and works as an allaround creative.

Genius.

The Guardian’s Gay Rights Interactive Chart

Gay rights in the US, state by state

Gay rights in the US, state by state

Gay rights laws in America have evolved to allow — but in some cases ban — rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people on a range of issues, including marriage, hospital visitation, adoption, housing, employment and school bullying. The handling of gay rights issues vary by state and follow trends by region.

Must not be too many open-minded folk living in the south east.

the southeast is the only place i'll never live.
of course there are exceptions like parts of F-L-A and atlanta.
civil rights are for everyone and the number one violators remain in the same places they've always been.

The south east and Wyoming. Every time I've been in the latter, I shudder emotionally.

Can Octopi Stay Relevant?

Octopi are known for their ink. But can they stay relevant in a paperless world?

Snapped from the Fake Science book.

No Cytokine Storms for Bats

The Bat: A Long-Lived, Virus-Proof Anomaly

The Bat: A Long-Lived, Virus-Proof Anomaly

When researchers looked at bats’ immune response to the viruses they carry, they found something quite novel. When mammals, including humans, die from a virus, it is usually due to an extreme immune reaction called a cytokine storm. It’s the body’s attempt to save itself, but it can actually do the opposite. Bats, however, are missing the genes that trigger this reaction—they don’t experience a cytokine storm, allowing them to carry the viruses unharmed.

Cytokine storms are quite interesting.

It looks like a thermos for bubble tea, with a separate bubble compartment on top.

Dinosaur Comics - Featuring Bill Murray's Glut

Dinosaur Comics - January 3rd, 2013 - awesome fun times!

How was I to know that this friggin’ movie would become the cultural name for “characters stuck in a variable but repeating time loop” […]

If you don’t read Dinosaur Comics at least weekly — you should.

. . or . .

FRIENDSHIP CANCELLED FOREVER.

The Greatest Science Photos Of The Year

The Greatest Science Photos Of The Year

It’s been a great year for science—Curiosity! The Higgs Boson!—and intrepid photographers have been there all along to document it. Narrowing our favorite photos down to just a dozen wasn’t easy, but here they are. Until next year, everybody.

Multi-exposure fencing, cube kites, explosions on the sun and more — something for the whole family!
