This is how we like to kick off the year, with a series of Out of Place objects constructed by a very clever Robert Rickhoff. Playground slides that lead you to oncoming traffic, volleyball courts on the autobahn, skate ramp crosswalks, all situations that are going to lead you to some sort of disaster. Rickhoff is based in Germany, and works as an allaround creative.
Genius.

Gay rights laws in America have evolved to allow — but in some cases ban — rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people on a range of issues, including marriage, hospital visitation, adoption, housing, employment and school bullying. The handling of gay rights issues vary by state and follow trends by region.
Must not be too many open-minded folk living in the south east.

When researchers looked at bats’ immune response to the viruses they carry, they found something quite novel. When mammals, including humans, die from a virus, it is usually due to an extreme immune reaction called a cytokine storm. It’s the body’s attempt to save itself, but it can actually do the opposite. Bats, however, are missing the genes that trigger this reaction—they don’t experience a cytokine storm, allowing them to carry the viruses unharmed.
Cytokine storms are quite interesting.

How was I to know that this friggin’ movie would become the cultural name for “characters stuck in a variable but repeating time loop” […]

It’s been a great year for science—Curiosity! The Higgs Boson!—and intrepid photographers have been there all along to document it. Narrowing our favorite photos down to just a dozen wasn’t easy, but here they are. Until next year, everybody.
Multi-exposure fencing, cube kites, explosions on the sun and more — something for the whole family!
