NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has delivered a glorious view of Saturn, taken while the spacecraft was in Saturn’s shadow. The cameras were turned toward Saturn and the sun so that the planet and rings are backlit. (The sun is behind the planet, which is shielding the cameras from direct sunlight.) In addition to the visual splendor, this special, very-high-phase viewing geometry lets scientists study ring and atmosphere phenomena not easily seen at a lower phase.
Gorgeous.

Quackenbush told the Los Angeles Times he was petrified when he realized his gun was missing. He said the gun must have slipped out as he moved in his seat during the movie, and he didn’t notice it was gone until the drive home.
He said he carried the gun into the movie theater as well as other public places to protect himself and others.
Good to know that we have armed citizens at the movies. The Hobbit can draw all kinds of weirdos.

Just in time for the holidays, a Louisiana judge ruled on Thursday that a woman had a right to offer her neighbors an unusual seasons greeting by hanging Christmas lights on her house shaped like a middle finger.
Sarah Childs was in a dispute with some of her neighbors in Denham Springs, just east of Baton Rouge, so she decided to send a message with her decorations.
Neighbors complained and police threatened to arrest her, so she teamed up with the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana and sued the city.
Now that’s the spirit!

When my life changed, I wanted it back the way that it was. Now that I’ve grown accustomed to the “new normal” I couldn’t possibly go back to the old.
Change is inevitable and generally good for the plants.

I didn’t stretch this morning and consequently my left arm feels tingly.
In unrelated news, coffee is a sweet heaven.

In this age of video game consoles and iPads, it’s easy to forget there was a time when miniature trains were at the top of every kid’s holiday wish list. While the hobby isn’t as popular as it once was, the kids who loved miniature trains haven’t gone away—they’ve just gotten older and more ambitious. No longer content with a train that runs in a circle on the living room floor, here are five really big examples of really tiny train sets.
Engine #9 was the only dream the boy ever had.
