World War I Centennial: Even Bigger Battleships, Part III

The First World War was an unprecedented catastrophe that killed millions and set the continent of Europe on the path to further calamity two decades later. But it didn’t come out of nowhere.

With the centennial of the outbreak of hostilities coming up in 2014, Erik Sass will be looking back at the lead-up to the war, when seemingly minor moments of friction accumulated until the situation was ready to explode.

Exploding Destroyer: Warship Sunk By a Torpedo in Pictures

The ship in question is the HMAS Torrens, a 351-foot (107m) long River class destroyer escort weighing 2,700 tons. Commissioned for service by the Royal Australian Navy in 1971, the escort was used for a number of purposes, including bringing troops back to Australia from the Vietnam War. Then, on June 14, 1999, it performed one final duty: helping to test the combat system of Collins-class submarine HMAS Farncomb.

Aircraft Carriers in Space

Last month, Small Wars Journal managing editor Robert Haddick asked whether new technology has rendered aircraft carriers obsolete. Well, not everyone thinks so, especially in science-fiction, where “flat tops” still rule in TV shows like Battlestar Galactica. So FP’s Michael Peck spoke with Chris Weuve, a naval analyst, former U.S. Naval War College research professor, and an ardent science-fiction fan about how naval warfare is portrayed in the literature and television of outer-space.

Converse High Tops - Game of Thrones Style

tcr! · Oct 5, 2012 at 1:05 pm

House Baratheon Converse Chucks

Support Your Favorite House With These “Game of Thrones” Converse High Tops

No matter which house you choose to support, there’s a custom pair of Converse high tops to prove your loyalty. These feature the name of the house embroidered on the side of each shoe along with the house sigil painted onto the fabric. These are made to order and take about 3-4 weeks to ship so order now!

Why yes, I would like a pair of these yellow House Baratheon Converse Chucks for the upcoming wintery holiday. Not my favorite house but I like the color and stag.

PS. If you’re not watching Game of Thrones, you’re really, really missing out. Really.

Terry, the Sheep With an Upside Down Head

Good One, God!: Sheep Born With Head On Upside Down

Good One, God!: Sheep Born With Head On Upside Down

This is Terry the sheep. Terry was born with his head on upside down. Obviously, he’s the black sheep of his flock. I’m not sure if the elves working in God’s workshop were drinking on the job that day or what, but that is NOT how you assemble a sheep. If Santa brought that to my house on Christmas I’d probably make a real effort to be better next year.

Yes, there’s video.

Jumbo Chocolate Peanuts

I ate a quarter pound of jumbo chocolate peanuts last night in 10 minutes. I have a sickness of sorts.

Batman landing

I just stumbled and almost fell down the stairs… Luckily I recovered mid-fall and turned it into a heroic “The Batman” type of landing.

Nobody was there to see it, which is good and bad.

I always try to land with a flourish, audience or no audience. Go big or go home, right?

If my soaks had more grippy, I would attempt more acrobatics at home. However, with my shoes on at work and going down to the basement I usually work on my fifth step dismount. I've almost perfected my double spin with an up twist.

A Bear and its Hunters

A Bear and its Hunters

A bear joins its hunters for a friendly group photo, somewhere in the Utah wilderness.

More hoaxes than you can throw a midget at.

This cylon from Battlestar Galactica watches over me while I work. A little creepy but he keeps me focused.

Travolta and Olivia-Newton John Look Like Freaks

Cheese is the word! Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta reunite for Christmas album

So wholesome, they toast cocoa instead of brandy.

I love Grease and sing a long with radio as much as the next guy — I’m not trying to be mean. But seriously, they look like plastic android facsimiles.
