Alt-right headed to D.C.

D.C. prepares for Sunday showdown between white supremacists and counterprotesters

D.C. prepares for Sunday showdown between white supremacists and counterprotesters

District leaders are preparing for what could be a contentious and trying day Sunday when the organizer of last year’s deadly white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville holds an anniversary gathering with up to 400 supporters in Lafayette Square across from the White House.

As many as 1,500 counterprotesters are expected at Lafayette Square and more at two nearby parks, setting up a possible volatile showdown that District and federal law enforcement officials say they are prepared to confront.

Unlike in Charlottesville, where police allowed the opposing factions to clash in what turned into a bloody melee, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said Thursday that the goal “will be to keep the two groups separate. . . . When they are in the same area at the same time, it leads to violent confrontations. Our goal is to prevent that from happening.”

Good lord, please let this end well.

I haven’t ate meat for close to 15 years but I can’t pass up a good BBQ sauce. I just dunk my fries in it.

Pancho’s in Iowa City. Which was also home of the 3 lb. burrito. 😎

I looked it up and it was “Panchero’s” in Iowa City. I swear it had “Home of the Three Pound Burrito!” in the window.

Morning potted plants

Morning potted plants

It’s no surprise that when I give plants room to grow and plenty of sunlight, they get bigger than they were before. There’s a life lesson there if anybody needs one.

In other news, here’s my earrings from another era.

When I drive up 7th Avenue

tcr! · Aug 8, 2018 at 12:13 pm

Audio (MP3): 20180808 - When I drive up 7th Avenue

White plastic chair

When I drive up 7th Avenue on St. Charles’ east side, headed toward Main Street I see this older guy sitting in his garage. It’s pretty packed in there but he’s got enough room for a lawn chair right up front by the overhead door.

I’ve seen him in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the early evening. Not everyday and not every time but he and his chair are fairly reliable.

it’s sad that we don’t approach people more often to hear their story. humans are poor communicators :(

tcr! tcr! · Aug 8, 2018 at 12:37 pm

Maybe if I was out walking and happened to meander by his house and he was also in his chair, then I might go up and say “hi.” Maybe. He might throw his chair at me and tell me to get off his lawn. 😊

I’ve walked by and said hello and he’s said hello back - I have often thought that we need the right moment or opportunity to engage people but as time goes by I recognize that sometimes we need to just make things happen. You should go with your intuition…

I say “go for it”! We only have this ONE LIFE to act on our ideas, outreach to others when we feel inspired, and spread joy to others in this world. Just do it…you’ll be happy you did.

Lea Jackman · Aug 8, 2018 at 6:56 pm

Write the next chapter! He is friendly. (We live across the street.). His daughter is delightful as well. Life is too short not to act on those thoughts. You’ve got nothing to lose and you both have everything to gain!

Well, I made a special trip by his house on my way home from work. His garage door was shut so maybe he’s having a nap. 😴 When I’m retired I’m gonna be napping at least twice a day. Plus, it is 80°F outside and with his house facing west it probably gets pretty hot come around 3 o’clock.

But in other news, for those who’ve commented on my writing, I just wanted to put it out there that I do a printed monthly magazine and a fairly regular podcast. If you’re into those kinda things.

Momma J Momma J · Aug 8, 2018 at 11:57 pm

Star Trek is getting Patrick Stewart back

tcr! · Aug 7, 2018 at 12:19 pm

Patrick Stewart To Star In New ‘Star Trek’ Series As Jean-Luc Picard On CBS All Access

It’s official — Patrick Stewart is returning to the Star Trek franchise. The acclaimed Shakespearean actor is set to headline a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access, reprising his iconic Next Generation character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The project, which has been rumored since the June announcement of a Star Trek universe expansion with new series, was just unveiled by Stewart himself in a surprise appearance at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention (watch the video above).

This is pretty exciting and I’m glad that it’s not a reboot. Shows need to be moving forward and not retreading familiar territory. Could you imagine if Picard went to the same planets and told the same stories? No, because he wouldn’t. He’s out, pulling down his shirt, ordering tea, exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations. New, new, new.

What’s not exciting is the CBS All Access bullshit. After calculating the subscription plan I’d be paying $100 for one season of Star Trek. Fuck those guys. It’d be cheaper to just buy it on DVD.

Who Made Who by AC/DC

tcr! · Aug 6, 2018 at 11:43 am

Peeps, for whatever reason I needed to listen to the Who Made Who disc this morning. So with that said here’s your kick-you-around-the-world Monday jam.

The title track rhythm guitar and bouncing baseline soothes my soul just like it did back in the late 80s. And then the lead comes in about 40 seconds to frenzy up the song just a little. It’s really hard for me to sit still when this song comes on.

“Ain’t nobody told you” — that one lines sums up the bigger picture of me missing the manual. For life.

Also, check out this dude playing the rhythm guitar parts for D.T. and Sink the Pink from the same disc. I doubt if you can find better riffs in anything that’s been out since.

I love that bar chords are just part of the riffs, they don’t make up the riffs.
