The Dark Tower’s new angle

Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in The Dark Tower

Review: Dark Tower film barely uses books’ lore—but works anyway

Stephen King’s seven-book series The Dark Tower has finally received a screen adaptation, and fans should brace themselves: it slaps a giant reset button on the series’ lore. (Which, a longtime series fan may explain to you, is somewhat appropriate.)

This long-in-production film lands with a clear emphasis on running lean. It’s a hair over 90 minutes long; its variety in scenery and locations is far from epic; and the story focuses on only three familiar characters. The result feels more like a Stephen King version of an ’80s misunderstood-teen film than you might expect, and, as such, its framework feels a little disposable—as if the names “Man In Black,” “Gunslinger,” and “Jake Chambers” could have been swapped if a license fell through at the last minute.

The great Dark Tower film we’ve wanted for years, this ain’t. But as an isolated, “inspired by Stephen King” piece of summer cinema, this first (and hopefully not last) Dark Tower film succeeds at finding a new angle to the series’ origin story, which is sold by a taut script, solid acting, and a compelling angle on what revenge looks like for both a boy and a man.

I didn’t read more than those first three paragraphs because I haven’t seen it yet…but I can work with that.

I guess I thought everyone who reads these pages knew: Dark Tower is the book that SGC pleaded with me to read and I refused. I was still into early early King. I’ve never read the Dark Tower stuff.

The series is well worth the read, however, the movie is better if you haven’t read them.

It’s an epic adventure that didn’t translate well into a 90 minute film. I wanted to like it but, meh.

The Dark Tower Fandango tickets

The Dark Tower opens this Friday. I have it on my calendar that it opened last Friday. 🙄

I don’t know what it is with me and movies lately. It’s like I’m living in the Mid-World dimension.

The Dark Tower - Official Trailer

tcr! · May 3, 2017 at 8:58 am

If it falls, hell will be unleashed.

Finally! I’ve been waiting for the trailer for I don’t know how long. Just watch how he loads his revolver around 2:00!

I’m warming to the idea of Idris Elba playing the Gunslinger although I’d have picked a Clint Eastwood type with the traditional cowboy hat for Roland if it were me. I say this too much probably but I really liked Tom Hardy in Fury Road. His face might be too round though.

I give the graphic novels an A+ for being more than I imagined how everything would look. The trailer has a bit of The Matrix going on but I kinda expected that for an “action” movie. The Matrix changed everything.

Also, from the Wiki page:

The film has been stated to be not a typical adaptation, but more of a new take on the series…and Arcel said that fans will know the movie is a sequel to the book series.

Regardless, I’m excited and I should finish the books before the movie comes out.

They got Instagram for the movie, too: instagram.com/darktowermovie/

August 4th, peeps.
