Audio (MP3): 20180731 - Banning plastic straws
I still can’t wrap my mind around banning plastic straws. My beef with the ban isn’t so much the ban on plastic straws themselves because that’s definitely a step in the right direction. But let’s also get rid of plastic sacks nationwide, too, while we’re at it. And Q-tips. Because remember that little seahorse?

Someone told me that the cartoons we watched as kids, the Looney Toons, were banned because of all the violence. Wile E. Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Foghorn Leghorn, etc, were all banned due to excessive violence. I can only surmise they thought watching this…See More

Because people have more empathy for dead sea turtles than dead children…

Plastic straws have been found in the noses of turtles

Yeah, it wasn’t so much about the straws as to what’s still legal.

Don’t buy the anti straw propaganda. That was a stir stick! LOL

It is always been my view that while some of us identify as left and some of us identifies right. Almost all of us truly exist somewhere in the center. We end up electing fringe candidates out of fear of each other. As a result straws get banned in California and in other parts of the country you can’t even buy a glass of wine with your dinner.

Exactly this.

Plastic straws are also actually useful to some people and the most viable option for them. People who don’t *need* straws can always decline them, or people who *do* need them should be able to ask. Now people are talking about a prescription for plastic straws. But yeah, keep those high capacity rifles on the shelf.

Maybe we can form a NSA (National Straw Association) to defend straw rights nation wide.

Assault rifles are illegal

Exactly what is an “assault rifle” and what isn’t often depends on who a person is talking to. Granted, fully automatic rifles are how the government defines “assault rifle” but I bet anybody that looks at an AR-15 is gonna say it looks like an assault rifle, whether the particular model is banned or not.

Looks can be deceiving. And to some people im a scary person that you cant let your kids play outside when im around

And if those people don’t let their kids play when you’re around, their kids would then be missing out on one of the best dudes east of the Mississippi.

My eye roll was more, as fivewayrack pointed out, how lopsided our laws can be.
From what I’ve read commercial fishing pollutes the oceans with more plastic than anything else. So where are the regulations, enforcements, and punishments for that group?
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-06-07/plastic-straws-aren-t-the-problem
And more… Where are the strict emission laws for the airlines and the shipping industries? How many pollutants are they dumping into the atmosphere each day?
If we’re gonna clean up the oceans, we really need to go full balls. Is banning plastic straws really gonna make that big a difference? Seems to me it’s like using that same straw to suck up an entire ocean.

It’s like guilting people for not being vegan for destroying the planet when big Agra does more to harm our environment than me eating shrimp pad Thai.

I’m giving reusable straws a try right now, but I’m not loving them. I HATE paper straws! They feel so gross in your mouth & disintegrate in your drink.
Our laws are and always have been lopsided.
Besides, we can stop straw production nationwide, and at the end of the day, there’s still China.

I bought some reusable straws also. For some people they’re still not a viable option. They’re not sterile for one thing and can be hard to clean. Mine are metal and that’s not safe for some people.

Mine are metal too. They provided a ‘pipe cleaner’ type thing to use in between washes, and they can be put in the dishwasher. However, it’s really not working for me. I also don’t think they are getting clean enough 😳

We’ve ranked 20 well-known canned tuna brands that can be found in grocery stores nationwide based on how sustainable, ethical, and fair their tuna products are for our oceans—and for the workers that help get the products to store shelves.
If you’re going to buy tuna, make sure to choose a responsibly-caught option.
Good stuff. Know your tuna, peeps.

Also, I know we’ve been over this before but as a refresher, you don’t microwave fish at work.
Kelly K · Aug 17, 2018 at 2:52 pm
I don’t eat fish, but I would think that one should not microwave fish anywhere… it seems unsafe for some reason. Props to the barista, btw.
I’m not discouraging the use of reusable straws (I’m on the hunt for a decent one myself), or any recycling, BUT the oceans will never be safe unless countries like China stop their horrific practices!
