I was driving my youngest daughter and her friend over to yet another of friend’s house moments ago.
As we drove by the Campana building I offhandedly remarked, “if I had some spare change I’d buy that building and have a fireman pole installed at the top of the tower down to the ground floor.”
My daughter and her friend responded only with silence as 101.9 continued to play whatever it plays in the background.
Feeling slightly slighted I continued, “do either of you have any thoughts on this gravitational installation?”
With nary a look Maggie answered with a concisely decisive “no, that be dangerous” and then went back to her Instagrams and Snapchats.
Not feeling entirely defeated I wondered if a shift to Rapunzel might win me more middle school conversation. She had long hair that would’ve been perfect for the Campana tower.
“Do you think Disney will ever make another Rapunzel movie?
Maggie looked directly at me this time with serious sternness and replied, “there’s no more of that story to tell.”
“Ah-ha! Kinda like when I cut off my beard a forte night ago!” I said eagerly with dual scissor fingers.
Unfortunately Maggie learned chapters ago that one of the best ways to end a conversation is to simply stop talking.
As such the verbal story ends there and I play-raced the other Saturday afternoon drivers for the remainder of our journey, wanting some pleasure of the long westwardly drive down Fabyan.
…
And now a handful of pages later I’m driving in radio silence to my own empty castle and, knowing full well the magic of Maggie’s single digit days are long gone, I’m grateful that those days were real once upon a time.
Update:
I had also posted this to one of the local What’s Happening groups on Facebook. Shortly thereafter the community started to get on my nerves with their dumb GIFs replies and questions on why I had posted it.
So then I deleted the post and told them they could carry on with their advertisements and recommendations.
Then I had the below FB Messenger conversation.
And the world was a better place.
