Guys, where do you go to eat for comfort food on an overcast Monday? π½
Some place with a menu similar to Denny’s or Colonial Cafe but with good food. Money is no object. Reservations are OK.
Willing to travel to St. Charlie, Geneva, Batavia, and even Elburn.
If they’re playing Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’ when Sara and I arrive, even better.
—
Update: I should mention that I haven’t ate meat for close to 15 years. Sara does though so it’s not taboo or anything. However, catering to both palettes would be ideal.

Just a heads up, Firewater is doing a slow open. It will be a week or 2 before we are full force. Employees are being trained, so please don’t be so quick to judge if you stop in. π it takes a bit to train the employees to be on point :) We hope you all enjoy the food though. Again, slow open. In a week things should be ready to roll β€οΈ
sinceresarcasm · Sep 24, 2018 at 6:10 pm
What time are you all there until tonight???
Reed P · Sep 24, 2018 at 6:15 pm
They are there until 9 pm. Again, our food is amazing but the employees are taking their time to make sure they put out the best π
sinceresarcasm · Sep 24, 2018 at 6:18 pm
I totally understand π I have been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years - I’ve had my fair share of soft opens!!!
Reed P · Sep 24, 2018 at 6:20 pm
Then you understand it takes time to make great employees. π thank you so much & we hope you enjoy β€οΈ

Burgers, bbq and Italian? I don’t think that’s what was asked for.
Try the papa bear in Aurora.

Gammon has pizza, burgers, grilled cheese, and other comforts that are amazing. Oak street has burgers, nachos, salads, an awesome French onion soup, and so many other really good menu items.

It’s breakfast, but my #1 comfort food is Andres Restaurant Chicken Enchiladas Crepes Verdes. I believe on the back of the menu….I’ve been ordering them for at least 8 years and still my absolute favorite β€οΈ
duda · Sep 24, 2018 at 9:56 pm
I’m sure they’d be just as amazing without the chicken since egg is the main feature π

If you’re looking for decent diner fate for dinner, the only place to get it after 2:30 or 3 PM is Lum’s in Geneva.
Monningh · Sep 25, 2018 at 6:07 am
Don’t they close before dinner?
Graf · Sep 25, 2018 at 7:27 am
Oops - just checked website. They close at 4 PM. Also, the name is Lumes Pancake House and it is in Batavia, not Geneva. Other than that, I was sort of correct! πππ

We ultimately chose Craft Urban. Well, Sara chose Craft Urban because she had never been. I had their Nice Salad and Charred Cauliflower, both were superb. Sara had the Short Rib Burger and she whispered unprovoked, “this might be the best local burger I’ve had.”
I appreciate all of your suggestions, too! We’ll definitely visit the non-winners since we go out for dinner. A LOT. Yep, I’ve made note of the ones we’ve never been to. I’m interested in visiting the Elburn restaurants as we’ve never ventured farther west than Randall that I can remember.
Note to restaurateurs: having an easy to find, up-to-date menu on your website along with your phone number and address is mission critical in the here and now.
Also, having at least one vegetarian option on Le Menu is helpful. I’m not saying it’s required but it can be deciding factor in where we eat.
Sara makes no bones about eating good meat and I’ll happily accompany her wherever she goes unless… I’m stuck drinking cucumber water through a paper straw like a moron.
Fish sammies are probably the easiest. Baked beans in a hotdog bun with a side of coleslaw will work.
PS- I’m still wondering about Craft Urban’s white brick building, too… π€
diedrick · Sep 25, 2018 at 11:15 am
well, then definitely try Eddie Gaedel’s in Elburn. They have housemade baked beans that’ll blow your mind and german potato salad. Dare I say, better than my German mother’s. Oh, and Friday fish fry is a game changer. No straws. http://www.eddiegaedelpubandgrill.com/
