Have you thought of having a single column that constantly refreshes? I see them all the time on those annoying Hollywood gossip type sites.
Not sure if the server would crap out having to constantly search and load the last post in the stack.

I prefer the one column. I just like everything in chronological order so I don’t miss anything.
