Dear parent/guardians,

As many of you already know, today there was a nationwide walk out planned. Here at the middle school level we left this situation in the hands of the students and did not make a specific plan other than if a student left a classroom they were directed to go out the front door where I would be able to monitor them with other staff members.

Not knowing what middle schoolers would do, we were prepared for anywhere between 1 and 700 kids walking out. The reality was that around 175-200 students were outside from 10:00-10:17. The students conducted themselves appropriately and ended up sitting in silence for an extended period of time. At no point did we as a school give them any direction other than to go out the front door and stay within a specific space.

I am sending this email to you so you can ask your own child if they went outside and maybe follow up with asking them why they did or did not do this. This follow up conversation is probably important to have so kids know what message they think they sent today.
