With Maggie being gone today and the March 2017 magazine off to the printer, the only logical thing for me to do was not cut the grass but to work on the April 2017 issue.
But with me being me and the Internet being rabbit holes, I got sucked into watching Pixie videos. So without further ado, here’s your said-the-lady-to-the-man-she-adored Sunday jam.
I love everything about this song. That it’s live. That it’s haunting. That each instrument has its own unique voice and place. The jangling acoustic guitar. The wailing lead guitar riffs. The clean, round bass carrying the mix. The drum taps that come in about 1:36 and the bass still holding the melody. Ain’t no choice but to nod and sway to the groove.
And of course the lyrics.
If you go, I will surely die. We’re chained.
When I listen, the lyrics surely seem to be written by way of experience. Sang with that same emotion, too.
HEY!
Kim Deal’s backing “chained” — same thing. With her head titled slightly around 1:16, she looks innocently and sincerely desperate.
“Been trying to meet you” — okay, that was me up and down the street as a teenager. I’ll deny it though.
And I’ve always wondered who Mary was but I never wanted to find out.
PS- Whenever I recorded music I generally wanted the rhythm guitar to be acoustic. Pixies are the reason why.
