I’d never listened to much Warren Zevon. Beyond Werewolves of London I was fairly ignorant of his work.
With Letterman finishing up last week the web was chock full of the best guests lists. This is where I “discovered” the later, soon to be late Zevon. Later as in, almost gone but still full of feeling and force.
Here’s a very real documentary about him and his fight to finish his last album The Wind.
Here’s a very ragged, beautiful cover of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door from the same album. That’s David Lindley providing the glorious slide work,
Both vids brought a lump to my throat
Enjoy every sandwich. :-)

i was lucky enough to discover warren when Excitable Boy came out. i don’t remember where or how i learned, but i still have the vinyl. it’s in a 100 way tie for my favorite albums. lawyers, guns and money. dad, get me out of this. i remember a feature story in rolling stone that told the story of his collaborating with springsteen and bruce asked him where the rest of the verses were in what warren considered a finished song. i love the sparse lyrics that were in a lot of his songs. you can say a lot by what you leave out.

i saw jackson browne twice in iowa. he had david lindley in the band both times. david played guitar of course but he also worked the fiddle and the pedal steel. david was also notable for his fashion sense. very loud and outrageous wardrobe. not necessarily rock star stuff, just a very distinct individual style, lots of fun to watch and listen to.
i’ve got myself off track as usual and forgot to say i also saw warren iowa city, approx ‘83. he played at hancher auditorium and it was kind of a strange venue for him. hancher is/was the more strait laced venue and didn’t host many rock shows.

Correction:
It’s Randy Mitchell – slide guitar and backing vocals on Heaven’s Door.
Lindley does appear on the album.
