I am on a Zappa kick for sure lately.
Drawn more to the mellow and instrumental choices.

my brothers and i loved “overnite sensation” and “apostrophe”. when sheik yer bouti and joe’s garage came out, we became followers. saw him approx ‘84-‘85 in des moines ia at the acoustically perfect civic center. this was during a sort of joe’s garage greatest hits thing. it was excellent. although frank had open derision for iowa, “all i can see is corn”, i didn’t expect him to love iowa. i didn’t take it personal that he mocked iowa.
it may have been part of the show but women threw underwear, etc on the stage. a member of the band picked them up with a long device known as a “grabber’ for elderly people or people with disabilities. frank and the band made a big thing about how the underwear stank.
but the music. the music was inspiring. it was musician ship. it was…good. even great. always been a fan.

I saw him on the 84 tour in Halifax. I’d been listening to Tinseltown Reunion and Sheik yer bouti. The show was very straight forward. Not much interaction, just the tunes and Frank winding out on some nice solos. I was very happy. I do remember he brought some local girl up at the end of Crew Slut.
My brother the uber fan had moved out of town years before and always pined about missing the show. He never got to see Frank. My friends who came with felt the show was terrible because Frank wasn’t cracking jokes all night.
I read the undies were being made in to some kind of quilt. There’s a write up in the liner notes for the Tnseltown album, plus a fairly long bit on the album.
