i’m not one of those people that has a cell phone…
i was gonna finish that with something or other, but it’s pretty much done with those words.
i have a cell phone but i never got in the habit. i don’t leave it turned on, so it’s pretty much worthless,
also, i don’t have an internet connection. and i didn’t have one that would take pictures until this past summer.
i don’t have kids. mostly glad. i would have been a useless dad. i’m much better now that i’m older, but when it would have been primetime to have kids, i was wrapped up in a ball of fuck.
i encountered 2 different sets of kids today. i love it when this happens. i went to the early show of “monuments men”, to get a good price and because it fits best with my schedule. it was a crowded day at the show; many kiddies seeing something or other.
the first kid i saw was with her dad and 2 older brothers. she was about 2. she was unabashedly working a pacifier. her dad and 2 older brothers took off and i noticed she didn’t follow and they didn’t notice. i let about 15 seconds go by before i got her attention and pointed to the video games, where her dad and brothers were. i told her that her dad went over there. at first she didn’t know why i was talking to her. it only took about 3 seconds but she “got it” and ran over there. turns out her mom was over there with other kids as well.
when they came back by, the parents never even knew she’d been momentarily lost. but she looked at me as she went by. it was sooo cool. she didn’t really know how to say thank you in a situation like that, not yet anyway, but she meant it.
the next set of kids i talked to was about 2 mins later. i was looking around and noticed these kids were looking up at me. i flashed the peace sign. it was a boy and a girl, about 4 and 5, and they were standing with their parents. the girl flashed it back. and then the boy.
then the girl asked what i was doing there. i said i was coming to see a movie. i said my name was jim and then both of them introduced themselves, so proper, displayed training in the art. i offered my hand and they shook it. their parents noticed me creepin’, not really, they also knew it was adorable. they were smiling and laughing to themselves. i asked the kids what they were going to see and i couldn’t understand what they said, cuz it was so crowded.
then e. came over with the tickets and i told her. she’s about half deaf, so she couldn’t understand what i was sayin’ in the noisy lobby, but she knew it was about children and there weren’t any charges pending. she smiled.
it was cool.

I read this early yesterday morning and thought about it many times over the course of the day. This should really be an op-ed in all the major papers. It's that good — not only the writing, but the message. Well done.

The Monument Men movie is high on my list.
We saw the LEGO movie yesterday. You should see it if you haven't already. :)
