Spoilers ahead ☠️ 🔫
It was an Apes movie so I had to love it. However, it was my least favorite of the 2011 reboot series.
What immediately threw red flags was that not long into the film soldiers snuck up on a group of apes in a forest. In broad daylight. And a few minutes later snuck up on them again at the apes’ home base. While they were sleeping. That doesn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen. Why did that happen?
What didn’t happen was the scene in the photo above. There was only a brief skirmish with an army of apes vs. an army of humans. Which is fine. The story took a different turn…but I’m not a big fan of setting expectations and then not following through.
I’ll also say that having a mixed-match team go on a mission, well, we’ve all seen that movie. And then when movies bring in the Ewoks it feels less about the plot’s overall arc and more about the marketing team’s family-friendly agenda. I won’t make a joke about asian stereotypes but I could. Maybe it was to add support or counter balance Nova’s character. Regardless, rule of thumb: no comedic relief in ape movies.
Ya, I know everybody’s a critic.
Incorporating nods to the original films, setups, and the like was good. Yes, please tickle my heart with nostalgia. I’m a sucker.

Thankies. I’m going later on. I saw all 5 originals on a summer afternoon at the theater in Ottumwa.
