Crunchy, overdriven guitars meet odd time signatures, on Not right with god. The Illinois-based indie rockers explore themes of spiritual alienation and internalized trauma on this track, highlighted by off-kilter, bass-heavy grooves and chunky, distorted riffs.
Dark and intrusive lyrics detail the downward spiral and eventual descent into self-loathing, underpinned by religious condemnation and abuse. The jagged melodies, opaque sound and asymmetric grooves perfectly reflect its somber message, making tcr!’s Not right with god an easy recommendation for post-punk and indie rock fans.
Decent production and mix. Nice intro, great wonky, shuffling groove between bass and drums. Interesting guitar fx. Terrific odd time signatures/mixed meter in the verse that reflect the “uncomfortable” character of the song. Angular melodies that also serve the same function. Tremendous heavy, sludge-influenced guitar riffs where the bass is doing most of the melodic work.
Great ending, love the guitar fx hang. Lyrics do a good job of capturing the emotional exhaustion and frustration that comes with this sort of internalized abuse. Could be cathartic for a portion of listeners. All in all, this is a solid post-punk track with math and sludge influences, that does a great job of tackling a tricky topic. Excellent work on this one!
