The guitars crunch with the fervor of sandpaper dragging across an old amplifier, their fuzzed-out tone chewing through any notion of clean structure. It’s punk, but smeared with the introspective grime of alt. rock—gritty, unfiltered, and hypnotically imperfect. The unpolished aesthetic is crucial. This song wouldn’t work if it were clean. Its magic is in the fray—the feedback that’s just a bit too loud, the mix that feels duct-taped together, the vocals that sound like they were recorded in a busted hallway mic.

Guys, feast your eyeballs on these photos I took only moments ago. The city of St. Charles is hosting a Pumpkin Composting Event tomorrow (Sat Nov 3) from 8am to 12pm at the Municipal Utilities Complex. That’s on Devereaux Way off of Riverside Avenue, just south of Langum Park.

I don’t know about you guys but I like pumpkins. I like composting. I kinda like events. I definitely like Saturdays. I can take or leave Novembers.

Without a doubt I wanna go to the Municipal Utilities Complex. It’s a true complex. Just look 👀 at the size of that compound. They got bulbous buildings, algae farms, a tar pit. They got everything. I bet they even got those fancy drinks with the little umbrellas for their staff while they’re all on a smoke break.

I didn’t see a lot of composting but I did see a dumpster plumb full of pumpkins!

When Sara and I were up in Galena I found and bought a trombone at an antique store. Same store I got the looney bin room numbers.

And then I hung up the trombone in the blue room with a curtain holdback hook. Because of course that’s what you do. I was gonna put it above the window but Sara said maybe beside. Of course her idea was better.

I blew it a little when I got home and I sounded just about as good as I did when I was ten and played one in school.

It’s been monsoon season around the Fox Valley so various places were closed but it was still a good adventure meandering around the Fabyan Forrest Preserve and Fabyan Villa.

First time we’ve went inside the Japanese Garden, too. I’ve only lived here for over ten years.

And it’s pretty cool that Fabyan started his Riverbank Laboratories right across the street from his house, ya know doing cryptography and stuff.

We stayed at the Saugatuck Resort Motel and ate at Everyday People, Grow, Lucy’s Little Kitchen, Pizza Mambo, and Ida Red’s Cottage. We also patronized Uncommon Coffee Roasters and It is what it is. There were others but those stand out.

My kitchen table was 23.5” x 36” and that was a smidge too small for more than two people.

The one good thing about buying a house from the early 80s that multiple families have lived in is that there’s all kinds of hidden treasures.

I found a handful of boards in the garage rafters, cut them to size, nailed them down, and now the table is 26” x 48” or so. It’s kinda farmhouse but I like it.

Next I dug out some of my black and white horror magazines, cut out 10-15 movie titles/monsters and then mod podge’d them to the top.

You know, because that’s what you do when you’re me. 😉
